In Indonesia, a kecamatan or district is a subdivision of a regency (kabupaten) or of a city (kota). A district is itself divided into kelurahan or administrative villages.
In the Papua and West Papua Province, kecamatan are known as distrik under the law of 2001 on "special autonomy for Papua province". This justifies "district" as the appropriate translation for "kecamatan".
